Legend of Grimrock 2 Walkthrough

Sewers

Secrets: 6, Treasures: 1, Power Gems: 2, Skulls: 1, Epic Items: 4, Gold Keys: 1, Gold Locks: 2
Map of Sewers
  1. Recipe On the ground here you’ll find a Recipe for creating bombs.
  2. Lever Flip this lever down and quickly move out of the way: the gates to the south and west will open, and poison bolts will shoot through both of them. If you are lucky, at least one of them will hit a ratling or two instead of coming into the room.
  3. Lightning Bombs Fight your way through ratlings to pick up the two Lightning Bombs here. Also keep an eye out for frogs around the sewers.
  4. Two-Handed Sword On the shelf here you’ll find a Two-Handed Sword. Find your way to the very south from here.
  5. Note You’ll find a Note on the ground here. When you step on the pressure plate to the west, this gate will close and lock, and you’ll have to fight a horde of ratlings along with a humongous boss who carries a cannon. Get yourself surrounded by ratlings as quickly as you can while you take down the boss, because the cannon shots can knock you back, causing you to miss a lot of attacks. Or, get yourself fully surrounded by ratlings to prevent the boss from shooting at all (for a while), then stick your back against a wall after you lure him close enough to you.
After the battle, examine the loot in the room: the Hand Cannon that the boss dropped, any Throwing Knives or Pellets the ratlings dropped, four Cannon Balls, a Leather Brigandine, and Shoes. More prominent items are noted below.
  6. Now that the boss has been defeated, there’s a likelihood of you getting ambushed by his twin along with the Trickster in the Hamlet of Stormbreach. There are several speculations on the wild web about what triggers their appearance. Some believe that it is linked to the number of Power Gems collected when you visit or revisit the hamlet. Others believe it may be connected to which maps you have finished exploring by then. It is unclear: for me, in one playthrough he never showed up no matter how diligently I tried to trigger him, in another playthrough the twin came with his gang of ratlings but the Trickster didn’t materialise. Fortunately there is a Hub windgate in the hamlet so it is not tedious to check often for their presence.
  7. Throwing Axe You’ll find a solitary Throwing Axe here.
  8. Potion & Cheese In this corner are a Potion of Resurrection and a piece of Cheese.
  9. Potion of Vitality Sitting proudly on a shelf here is a Potion of Vitality.
  10. Brass Key A Brass Key shines on the floor here…
  11. Brass Key … and a second one lies here. You can use one to re-open the locked gate at 5, and the other to unlock the gate at 13.
  12. Skull #6 Sulking away in this corner is a Skull.
  13. Cheese Here you’ll find three pieces of Cheese and a Note. Leave the nest at 5 and walk to the northeast.
  14. Peculiarity: one of the panels in the ceiling is missing, suggesting that one might fall into this ratling nest from above. In fact, that is not possible: an essence shrine sits above that spot.
  15. Reservoir Access Open this gate using the remaining Brass Key you got after defeating the ratling boss.
  16. Supplies Tucked away in this alcove are an Antivenom potion and a Smoked Sea Bass.
  17. Lever Toggle the lever here to open the gate for easy access back to the start of the sewers.
  18. Spike Traps First, fall down to the south of here into the pit of traps and press the hidden button to open the way to the secret (18). When you climb up the ladder out of the pit, grab the scroll through the closed gate (17).
After you’ve grabbed the goodies from the secret room, drop down from this bridge to the east and press the five buttons on the outer walls in the order indicated on the map (i.e., follow the spikes). If done correctly, the gate to 17 will open.
  19. Scroll This Scroll can be reached before the gate opens.
  20. Secret #44 On this shelf you’ll find an Archmage’s Cap.
  21. Crystal Shard Here you’ll spot a Crystal Shard of Protection.
  22. Power Gem #11 One more Power Gem is floating here, guarded by several wasps.
  23. Locked Chest This chest holds three Blooddrop Caps and a Burrow Rat Shank. Time to take a plunge into the water.
  24. Secret #45 The door to this room can be opened by pressing the button on the pillar opposite it. You’ll find a Sack containing two Etherweeds, two Blooddrop Caps, three Falconskyres, and a Mortar and Pestle.
  25. Lock Picks You’ll find a set of Lock Picks here. Swim back to the mainland, retrace your steps, and go all the way to the very west of the sewers.
  26. Pellets You’ll find 10 Pellets here. Note that for now this room can only be reached from the northern gate to it (near the ladder leading to D).
  27. Epic Item #2 When you pick up the Meteor Shield from this shelf, the Trickster will spawn in front of the secret door, which will close behind him. You can rush him to corner him in that one spot to prevent him from jumping around, or square-dance around him to avoid his bombs. He’ll teleport away after he’s taken enough damage, leaving behind a Fire Bomb and an Ornate Key. The key unlocks the door to the south, which will also open five secret doors around the sewers (including the one that closed behind the Trickster), releasing five fire elementals.
Fire elementals are extremely annoying to deal with because they are so fast that you have to swing at them while they are still a tile away. Worse still, they commit suicide on the party, invariably resulting in injuries. As one would expect, fire elementals are vulnerable to cold damage—this may not be immediately relevant given how much damage frost spells do, but much later in the game you will get a weapon that delivers cold damage. For now, Dispel is a better spell to use from a distance.
  28. Greater Healing Potion You can pick up a Greater Healing Potion from this alcove after the fire elementals have been released. The other alcoves that opened up are empty. Time to dive into the water: I’m going to start from the southeast (confirming that the new alcoves along the way are indeed empty) and work my way back to here.
  29. Healing Potion A Healing Potion has sunk down here.
  30. Lightning Bomb One Lightning Bomb has rolled down here.
  31. Leather Boots Someone has discarded their Leather Boots here.
  32. Arcana Deep in this pond are a Diviner’s Cloak and a Shaman Staff.
  33. Throwing Axe Someone’s Throwing Axe was lost in the water here.
  34. Sack In this sack you’ll find three Poison Bombs and a Potion of Vitality. Flip the lever next to it to open the gate to the north.
  35. Secret #46 In this pool, Silver Roaches respawn more quickly than elsewhere on the Isle of Nex. It’s not so quick that farmers can max out their levels, but it is faster than usual.
  36. Lock Picks A set of Lock Picks has somehow made its way into this extremely secret area.
  37. Epic Item #3 You’ll need to spend a Gold Key to be able to open the gates to here. The lock is on the southern side of the pool. Once open, you’ll be able to claim a Crystal Shield. Apart from being a very effective shield, the immunity to petrification alone makes it most definitely worth a Gold Key. Return to the main part of the sewers once you have finished fishing.
  38. Underwater Opening A break in the fence here will let you swim north. Be careful when you get out of the water on that side: apart from zarchtons (which are very easy by now), two of the fire elementals were released in that area.
  39. Crossbow Quarrel A single Crossbow Quarrel rests on the bed of this pool.
  40. Pellets You’ll find 10 Pellets here. After you have scouted the perimeter, explore the waters, but always climb to the perimeter for air when you need to. Or climb to the islands in the correct order to avoid having to do them again.
  41. Pellets Climb up to this island first. At this spot you’ll find 10 Pellets.
  42. Crossbow Quarrels This is the second to visit. At this spot you will find three Crossbow Quarrels.
  43. Northeastern Island Come here third. You need to walk on at least one tile of the island for the act to register.
  44. Northwestern Island This is fourth.
  45. Windgate After accessing the other four islands in the correct order, when you climb up to this one, a windgate will appear here, which will take you to 44.
  46. Epic Item #4 & Secret #47 In this chest, you’ll find Crystal Gauntlets and three Throwing Axes. Leave the room to the south, and make your way to B. We are mostly done in the Sewers and are now heading to the Hamlet of Stormbreach. We need one more Power Gem before we can convert them all into an essence. You could go up from D as well, but that will put you in the middle of the map and I prefer to start at one end of the map and finish at the other.
  47. Shortcut The Iron Key needed to open this secret door is in the House of Braids in the Hamlet of Stormbreach.
  1. Stairs from the Archives.
  2. Stairs to the Hamlet of Stormbreach (East).
  3. Stairs to the Hamlet of Stormbreach (South, where the shrine is).
  4. Stairs to the Hamlet of Stormbreach (West).
  5. This windgate will take you back up to the House of Braids in the Hamlet of Stormbreach.

  1. Turtle Eggs You’ll find at total of four Turtle Eggs in these three locations.
  2. Healing Potion A Healing Potion is in the corner.
  3. Pellets You can add 10 Pellets to your armoury.
  4. Secret #48 To open the gate to this locked chest, you have to press the three nearby buttons in a particular order: SNEESNN. Each correct press will emit a peculiar click, so you’ll know if you pressed a wrong button (start again if you do). The chest contains a Map and a Tome of Energy.
This chest has turned out to be a mimic almost every time for me. Head all the way west once you are done in this little mostly-isolated part of the land, collecting Etherweeds as you wade through the water.
  5. Turtle Egg Here is another Turtle Egg on the ground, and a button adorns the wall. The button will open a secret door to the west, releasing an ogre.
  6. Secret #49 On a pedestal here is a Tome of Knowledge. It’s time now to explore the mainland to the south. As you can see, the east is mostly empty, so I like to map it out before tackling the puzzles to the west.
  7. Treasure #8 Dig it up this locked treasure chest for a Jeweled Scepter of Ruling and a Crystal Shard of Protection.
  8. Gold Key Lying unguarded in the grass here are three Broadhead Arrows and a Gold Key (you will have an opportunity to use it in just a few minutes). Head northwest to extract one more Power Gem.
  9. House of Needles You need to flip three levers marked 10 to open the three gates to the Power Gem (16). Spikes continuously rotate around the interior of this ‘house’, but there are a few safe spots where you won’t get poked (coloured green on the map). Note that there are also some bushes (not shown on the map) you will need to cut down on the way—don’t tempt fate too much: take a swing or two, run to safe ground, and repeat if the bush still persists.
  10. Levers These levers open the gates to 16. There is a good chance you will have to battle air elementals after you have opened all three gates: as of now, the only offense you have against them is the Dispel spell from the Acolyte Staff or from any casters who have a point each in water magic and concentration.
  11. Lock Picks A set of Lock Picks can be found here. On the western side of these bushes is a keyhole that accepts a Gold Key if you want to use it (see 15). You can grab your reward on the way out if you choose to use a key.
  12. Antivenom You’ll find a flask of Antivenom here…
  13. Potion of Resurrection … and a Potion of Resurrection here.
  14. Spirit Mirror Pendant You’ll have to cut down a bush here before you can claim a Spirit Mirror Pendant.
  15. Rogue Boots You’ll need to spend a Gold Key (west of 11) to open the gate to the Rogue Boots here. They are only slightly better than Leather Boots, and having a complete Rogue set doesn’t grant any additional benefits, so this is not such a hot choice for spending a Gold Key. If you have extra unspent keys, it’s not too bad a choice either.
  16. Power Gem #12 A Power Gem floats here, completing your current collection of four. Flanking it are two pedestals with a Greater Healing Potion and a Greater Energy Potion. Leave the House of Needles at 9 and continue exploring the west of the hamlet.
  17. Movie Reference You’ll find an Orb of Vilson here. Apart from embodying the persona of the ball from Cast Away, it does nothing.
  18. Hub Key A Hub Key sits on this pedestal. Use it near C to activate the Hub windgate.
  19. Pellets It’s novel to find 10 Pellets sitting on a pedestal instead of somewhere on the ground.
  20. Throwing Axes The two Throwing Axes here don’t disappoint though; they know their place is on the ground. Remember to activate the Hub windgate before proceeding to 21.
  21. House of Braids Stepping on the pressure plate here will reset the puzzle and close the pit in front of you. Stepping on any closed pit will toggle all adjacent pits. You have to flip four levers to open the gate to 23 and reach there safely. Follow the arrow on the map or use these directions: SSSS, grab Iron Key, EN, flip lever, WNE, flip lever, SW NW SWW, flip lever, N, flip lever, ESESWS.
  22. Iron Key On this pedestal is an Iron Key, which unlocks the way to a windgate in the Sewers (E), which teleports you back to 21. We’ll use this very soon to reduce some trekking that we would have otherwise been forced to do.
  23. Epic Item #5 In this chest you’ll find a Maul. Now that you have the Iron Key, climb down into one of the pits to return to the Sewers. You will fall very close to 45 there. Use the Iron Key at 45, but don’t go into the windgate yet: climb out of the Sewers at C to reach an isolated portion of the Hamlet of Stormbreach (B).
  1. Stairs from the Sewers (East).
  2. Stairs from the Sewers (South).
  3. Hub windgate.
  4. Stairs from the Sewers (West).

Sewers

  1. Shortcut Use the Iron Key from the House of Braids in the Hamlet of Stormbreach to open this secret door. Before going through, climb up to C and exit the sewers from there.
  1. Stairs to the Hamlet of Stormbreach (South, where the shrine is).
  2. This windgate will take you back up to the House of Braids in the Hamlet of Stormbreach.

Hamlet of Stormbreach

Map of Hamlet of Stormbreach
  1. Shrine of Air After defeating an ogre, you’ll be able to place the four Power Gems here to convert them into an Essence of Air. Return to the Sewers via B, then use windgate C there to return to the hamlet’s mainland. Hoarders should use the Hub windgate (C) to dump dead weight and clear inventory space before proceeding (keep some pressure plate fodder, and be sure to carry the Meteorite you dug up very early in the game). If you do, you can even climb out to the Forgotten River, place your new essence on the correct pedestal (14) and then return to the hamlet—the courtyard is very close to the Hub. Whenever you are ready, proceed to 25.
  2. Way of the Snail You need to crawl slowly across the pressure plates, waiting about 3 seconds at each one. Doing this will open the gate to the south when you reach it, otherwise you will be smothered in a poison cloud and will have to try again. The gate will close every time you step on the first pressure plate. When you are through, pick up the Blooddrop Cap and exit at E into the Crystal Mine Entrance.
  1. Stairs from the Sewers (East).
  2. Stairs from the Sewers (South).
  3. Hub windgate.
  4. Stairs from the Sewers (West).
  5. Into the Crystal Mine Entrance.
