  1. Sack As soon as you enter the mines, go south and press the hidden button. You’ll then be able to reach this Sack, which contains four Blooddrop Caps and an Etherweed. Retrace your steps and climb the ladders to the east this time.
  2. Secret #50 These stairs lead out to the unfinished portion of the Twigroot Forest. While there, you’ll have to fight a few summon stones, but will also have access to a Crystal of Life.
  1. Entry from the Hamlet of Stormbreach.

Twigroot Forest

Map of Twigroot Forest
  1. Xafi Khakis You will be able to reach here only via the Crystal Mine Entrance (E). There is a pair of Xafi Khakis here. By the time you are able to reach here, they should only serve as pressure plate fodder.
  2. Wooden Box Here lies a Xafi Robe, a Xafi Shemagh, and a Wooden Box containing 20 Pellets, 5 Cannon Balls, a Sabre, and a Smoked Sea Bass. The Sabre is a very good heavy weapon. Press the button here to open the secret doors leading back out to Twigroot Forest. Stepping out of the secret doors will raise three summon stones for you to fight. A few other creatures may have also respawned by now. Return to the Crystal Mine Entrance (E) when you are done, and make your way back to the secret door there that you came from.
  1. Exit from the Crystal Mine Entrance.

Crystal Mine Entrance

  1. Full Helmet Concealed by crates and barrels is a Full Helmet. In this room is an opportunity to spend a Gold Key, but we will get to that much later on our way out of the mines (we will find two keys before then).
  2. Closed Gate First, climb down one of the open pits. You’ll land in a totally empty area (except for a Boiled Crag Beetle), but will be able to jump down to some goodies.

  1. Sack The Sack here contains a set of Lock Picks and an Antivenom. Pick up the Blooddrop Cap from around the corner, then take the windgate back up.

  1. Closed Gate The buttons around this room will toggle some pits. You need to flip the lever to the north to open this gate. After you return from downstairs, press the southern then eastern buttons, go through the northeastern gate, flip the lever, head out and press the western button. Once through this gate, there is not much you can do in the adjoining area so head all the way south and then east, collecting a couple of reagents on the way.
  2. Only the Fearless May Pass First climb down one of the open pits: you will have to fight several spiders down there, but the reward is worth it—a Gold Key.

Crystal Mine Core

Map of Crystal Mine Core
  1. Pellets You’ll find 10 Pellets here. After you’ve collected the reagents nearby, head north across the bridge (do not jump down into the pit—you should have already explored that earlier).
  2. Gold Key A Gold Key lies on the ground in this corner.
  3. Potion of Resurrection A Potion of Resurrection sits on this pedestal. Take the windgate back up once you’ve taken everything.

Crystal Mine Entrance

Map of Crystal Mine Entrance
  1. Only the Fearless May Pass After returning, stand at this spot and throw an item onto the pressure plate. The northern gate and all the pits will open, and a fireball will come shooting at you. Stand still; you will be teleported to the pressure plate before the fireball hits you.
Now go all the way north (past 6) to the other pressure plate to see the Island Master teleport away. You need to see him vanish. Walk back to 6 (one tile away from the wooden bridge), shoot a projectile north, retreat and move out of the way of the resulting spectral orb.
Retrieve the projectile you shot if you want, but be sure to take the weight off the pressure plate near 5 to close all the pits. Both gates to the south will have opened and, with the pits closed, you can now access that region (and spiders from there can access you).
  2. Oversight: If you attempt to open pits by throwing a weight on the pressure plate from the south to go down after the puzzle has been solved, you will never be able to close them again without cheating. This is not game-breaking.
  3. Launch Point Shoot a projectile north from here, then back away and to the side to get out of the way of the spectral orb. Be careful to not fall into the pits when backing away.
  4. Epic Item #6 On the shelf here is a pair of Crystal Boots, which makes solving the previous puzzle worth it.
  5. Lock Picks A set of Lock Picks can be picked up from here.
  6. Meteor Storm On this pedestal is a Scroll of Meteor Storm.
  7. Simulacrum There are four stone blocks in this room. In the opposite room are four force fields that block your progress. You need to move the four stones here to the spots marked with blue crosses to clear a path in the other room. If you manage to trap yourself on any one side of the stone blocks, the buttons on the western or eastern walls will reset the puzzle.
  8. Button Press this button to open the gates to 12…
  9. Lever … and then flip this lever to open the gate to your prize.
  10. Mine Key On the pedestal here is a Mine Key, which you will need soon. Leave this region and head all the way west for more adventures first.
  11. Ambush This is probably the nastiest ambush in the game. If you can, buff yourself up with spells or potions like Shield beforehand. When you get to this spot on the magical bridge, it will disappear under your feet and pairs of eyctopuses (that can blind you) and xeleroids (that can paralyse you) will spawn. Both debuffs are temporary, but given the frequency with which they are applied, they will probably last the duration of the whole battle. Try not to stand and take a beating; apart from debuffing you, they also hit like trucks.
After the ambush, the bridge will remain in place for the remainder of the game after you reactivate it, and you will not be attacked again.
  12. Pellets You’ll find 10 Pellets here.
  13. Cannon Balls You’ll find five Cannon Balls here.
  14. Secret #51 On this shelf is a Crystal Shard of Protection. However, when you pick it up, you’ll be teleported to an isolated part of the map in the northwest (near 18), where you will have to survive two fire elementals and an ice guardian.
  15. Pellets You’ll find 20 Pellets here.
  16. Poison Bomb A solitary Poison Bomb can be found at this spot. Nearby are two Broadhead Arrows. Step into the windgate to return to 17, and then walk all the way back to 20 (in the centre of the map).
  17. Locked Gate Use the Mine Key from 13 to open this gate. It doesn’t matter whether you clear out the north or south first (our final destination being in the west). We will go north first.
  18. Epic Item #7 & Secret #52 The hidden button to the north will form a magical bridge to this locked chest. It holds a pair of Meteor Gauntlets. Get rid of all the spiders before going for it—you don’t want to be cornered while examining your spoils.
  19. Sack In this Sack you’ll find a Salted Sausage, two Antivenom potions and a Torch. Nearby are a Falconskyre, a Blackmoss and a Smoked Sea Bass. Return to the gate at 20 to explore south now.
  20. Crossbow On the shelf is a Crossbow, and on the ground are three Crossbow Quarrels. Destroy the crates and barrels on the adjacent tile to find five Cannon Balls.
  21. Energy Potion An Energy Potion sits here. Backtrack a little to explore the remainder of the accessible parts of the map.
  22. Pellets You’ll find 10 Pellets and a Blackmoss here.
  23. Recipe On this pedestal is a Recipe (or actually only a clue) for potions that boost stats. Next to it are stairs down to the Crystal Mine Core, but we are not going to use them.
  24. Secret #53 Climb down from here to land on an isolated ledge in the Crystal Mine Core for another epic item. We’ll have to explore the remainder of this map when we return from the other side.

Crystal Mine Core

Map of Crystal Mine Core
  1. Epic Item #8 & Secret #53 On this ledge you’ll find a pair of Crystal Greaves and a set of Lock Picks. You may have to battle eyctopuses for them without any room to manoeuvre, so you might want to grab your prize and immediately climb down. Either way, before, during or after the battle, climb down into the Crystal Mine Abyss. We’ll finish exploring there before mapping this place out.

Crystal Mine Abyss

Map of Crystal Mine Abyss
  1. Crystal Flower You’ll find a Crystal Flower here. Nearby are two Mudworts.
  2. Wooden Box In the Wooden Box here are two Blooddrop Caps, two Falconskyres, and two Etherweeds.
  3. Lightning Bombs There are three Lightning Bombs here. Break down the crates and barrels on the adjacent tile for an Antivenom potion.
  4. Lightning Blade On the shelf here is a Lightning Blade.
  5. Power Me Up Hit the receptacle here with lightning (spell, Lightning Blade, Bomb) and step out of the way so the resulting spectral orb hits the receptacle. This will open the door to 6. Don’t stand right next to the receptacle otherwise the lightning will also blow up in your own face.
  6. Mine Key On this pedestal is a Mine Key, which you’ll need very soon.
  7. Broadhead Arrows Two Broadhead Arrows are lying unattended here.
  8. Antivenom An Antivenom potion can be picked up from here.
  9. Epic Item #9 & Secret #54 Place the Meteorite you have been lugging around for so long on this pedestal to transform it into a Meteor Hammer. It is a very powerful weapon, but keep a non-elemental weapon on hand—the Meteor Hammer will actually cure enemies such as fire elementals and uggardians.
  10. Locked Gate Use the Mine Key from 6 to open this gate. You will have faced very little opposition in the abyss until now. That is all about to change. Four fire elementals are lurking in the northeast. Hunt them down before they catch you unawares.
  11. Crystal Shard of Healing Though behind a secret door, the Crystal Shard of Healing and Crystal Flower here do not add to your secrets tally. Take them and go all the way to the south, stopping to pick up a Pitroot Bread and a Blooddrop Cap on the way.
  12. Note A warning Note lies on the ground here.
  13. Magical Bridge This magical bridge will disappear under your feet if you step on this central tile, dropping you into the pit below to face two xeleroids and a spider. This battle is entirely optional but it is worth a good chunk of XP and the reward is a Gold Key. However, it is much better to press the button on the eastern wall to manually toggle the bridge. You might be able to engineer a battle with only a single xeleroid at a time. Even if not, at most you will face two enemies and not three. You can then jump down to take care of the spider.
  14. Gold Key In this corner of the pit shines a Gold Key. You will need to re-enable the magical bridge to be able to go north.
  15. Power Gem #13 One more Power Gem floats here. Once you pick it up, all of the abyss beyond 10 will be crawling with spiders. Battle your way to 16, flip the lever to open the gate to A, and step into the windgate to be teleported to the Crystal Mine Core near A there. It’s up to you whether you want to hunt every spider down or make a quick getaway.
  16. Lever This lever opens the gate to A.
  1. Windgate back up to the Crystal Mine Core.

Crystal Mine Core

Map of Crystal Mine Core
  1. Crystal Flower You’ll find a Crystal Flower here. Pick it up, then shoot a projectile to the east to open the gate at 8. Then go around across the bridges towards that gate.
  2. Rope You’ll find Rope here. If you had not spent a Gold Key in the Cache, only now would you be able to safely climb down pits and ledges.
  3. Closed Gate This gate will be open if you fired a projectile on the pressure plate at 9 from 6.
  4. Throwing Axe Here lies a Throwing Axe. The pressure plate next to it controls the gates to the east and west. When weighed down, the gate to the east (8) will be open. Otherwise the gate to the west will be open. The first time you remove something from the pressure plate, a secret door to the north will open, releasing a pair of spiders (you need to remove your projectile from the pressure plate to be able to access 10).
  5. Bear Pelt Here on the ground lies a Bear Pelt.
  6. Mine Key On the pedestal here is a Mine Key, which you’ll need soon. The secret door to 12 will open when you pick up the key, releasing two spiders and an eyctopus. You can either rush them to trap the eyctopus behind the spider for a short while, or lure them into this area to give yourself room to move around.
  7. Sack In the Sack you’ll find here is a Smoked Sea Bass, a Lizard on a Stick, and Bread. You’ll need to weigh down the pressure plate near 9 to be able to return south and continue exploring. Once you get there, press the hidden button and head east.
  8. Throwing Axe Another Throwing Axe is waiting to be picked up here.
  9. Windgate Walk into this windgate to be teleported far to the west.
  10. Secret #55 When you reach here, the secret door south of 13 will open, releasing some spiders. On the pedestal here is a Crystal Amulet, one of the best equipment in the game. On the ground is an Antivenom potion. Return through the windgate once you’ve collected them. Remember to pick up the Mudwort from the new area that has opened up.
  11. Locked Gate Use the Mine Key from 11 to open this gate.
  12. Toggling Pits If you want your map to be 100%, climb down one of these pits. Otherwise, there is nothing down there except a way back up.
As spectral orbs constantly hit the receptacle, all the pits around here will toggle. Wait for the pit next to you to close and walk across to safe ground.
  13. Lever When this pit is closed, flip the lever and step back while you wait for the gate to open. When the pit closes again, find safe ground further in (19).
  14. Safe Ground First, climb down the pit to the north when it is open to reach a secret. You will land right next to a hidden button you need to press.

Crystal Mine Abyss

  1. Secret #56 To reach here you’ll need to press a hidden button to the south. On the pedestal you’ll find Archmage’s Loafers and a Crystal Shard of Healing. To return upstairs, you’ll need to flip a lever to open the way to the windgate, all while avoiding the spike traps that the room is filled with.

Crystal Mine Core

Map of Crystal Mine Core
  1. Safe Ground While you stand here, you can control how the pits toggle by either letting the spectral orb pass or by blocking its path. When the pits north of you close, flip the lever to the north to open the gate to 20, then quickly return here before the pits open under you. Eat a spectral orb after the gate has opened and rush over to 20.
  2. Safer Ground Once you reach here, look back into the puzzle. There is a hidden button on the wooden frame. Press it to open the secret door to 21. You’ll need to walk back across the closed pits to reach it, and make the trip back here once more.
After you have got the secret at 21 and returned here, try to lure spiders out of the adjoining room: they can step on the pressure plate there which causes fireballs and poison bolts to fly.
  3. Secret #57 A Tome of Health rests on this pedestal.
  4. Lightning Bomb Crates are hiding a Lightning Bomb behind them.
  5. Epic Item #10 You’ll find a Meteor Helm on the shelf here. There’s also a Mudwort around the corner.
  6. Lightning Bow On the pedestal here is a Lightning Bow, and on the ground are two Broadhead Arrows. Flip the lever nearby to open the gate back to the start of the level, even though you’ll never need to use it. Exit at B to reach a new portion of the Crystal Mine Entrance at C there. Surprisingly, you will face no opposition there.
  1. Stairs from the Crystal Mine Entrance.
  2. Stairs to the Crystal Mine Entrance.

Crystal Mine Entrance

  1. Supplies In this alcove is a Salted Sausage and a Speed Potion.
  2. Power Gem #14 A Power Gem floats unguarded here.
Consider your choice at 30 when you are done here, and flip the lever on the eastern wall to form a magical bridge back to the rest of the mine. You need to trudge all the way back to A or 2 to exit the mine (A will lead you directly to a Hub windgate), but stop by 31 on the way.
  3. Repeater You need to spend a Gold Key to be able to claim the Repeater. Although it’s probably the best firearm in the game, it’s still just a firearm. Not worth it. However, we have picked up two Gold Keys recently so depending on the choices you made earlier as well as your party composition, you may find this useful.
  4. Ammunition If you spend a Gold Key, you’ll be able to turn off the force field guarding 10 Cannon Balls and 50 Pellets. This is probably the worst use of a Gold Key in the whole game. Exit at A to return to the Hamlet of Stormbreach. From there, use the Hub windgate (C), dump any items you want to, climb up to the Forgotten River, and walk to Sleet Island (F). Once there, you need to exit the island at E to reach the Cemetery.
  5. This time (and using the route I have described so far), I encountered the ratling boss’ twin with his full gang as well as the Trickster when I got to the Hamlet of Stormbreach. You better be fully rested before you leave the mines! The twin leaves behind one more Hand Cannon as well as a Letter. If you survived all that, I’ll see you in the Cemetery!
Bug: This is also when the game seems to get really confused about the day/night cycle. Although the Timepiece shows a particular time of day, the sky seems to be 12 hours ahead or behind it. This doesn’t affect anything significant in the game though.
  1. Entry from the Hamlet of Stormbreach.
