32. Lava Rift

The ‘hermit’ at 2 is a defiler who has been summoning fire elementals from the rift that has opened at 3. He’ll pretend that he wants help. You can kill the ranger at 3 and let the defiler access the rift, for which he will reward you with an Iron Necklace (casts Fireball), but killing him will result in the same reward and more. We’d kill him after talking to the ranger anyway, so might as well do it now.
If you can’t kill him in one round, he’ll summon fire elementals. Had we spoken to the ranger and returned, he would have summoned a fire elemental beforehand, too. We miss out on that little bit of XP, but it’s better than having to walk across the whole map many times. Each party member gets 4,000xp
for killing him, and the Iron Necklace
from his dead body. The official cluebook says it has 12 charges.
Whether you choose to clear out all the elementals or not, eventually fight your way to 3 (remember to have +2 or better weapons equipped on the aggressor). The ranger is guarding the rift against the defiler. Approach him, but be mindful about getting too close. Trying to walk away from him can trigger his dialogue again and again, making it difficult to actually get away (more so if the hermit is still alive). For killing the hermit, he rewards us with a bracelet of Energy Containment
and the party gets another 4,000xp
.
Had we not killed the hermit already, we could have waited at the rift for him to summon more elementals for some extra XP.
