Dark Sun: Shattered Lands Walkthrough

10. Return to the Slave Pens

10.1. Genocide

Overhead map of the Slave Pens

As soon as you enter the slave pens from the sewers, you will be attacked by 2 half-giant guards, 4 Templars, and 13 human guards. There may be more depending on who you left alive before leaving the pens. Even more hostile guards will be making their way towards you from the east. So before using the grate at 1 in the sewers, cast Enlarge, Haste and Bless on everyone in the party, Strength on how many ever can get it (for me two party members can), and whatever other protections you have grown fond of. Dubhe can cast two level 3 spells so I will have one Fireball available. Remember that for spells like Haste and Bless your entire party has to be revealed otherwise only the party leader will get them.

If you want, you can cheese it by saving and reloading until people get 24 strength since the spell can give you lesser enhancements. It is not necessary and I will take whatever the game gives me.

Go up to the pens and you will immediately be in combat mode. Depending on initiative rolls, you may also get hit a few times. Depending on when Dubhe can go, a Fireball will help a lot. When Bellatrix and Castor get a chance, one of them will summon a lesser elemental. From then on it’s just a matter of getting hits in to clear out the room, watching your HP all the time, healing a little if required along the way.

If you open the Overhead map, you will notice that most of the flashing dots are centered around you, while some are flashing in the northeast. There is no campfire in the pens any longer and you will not be able to rest. If you really want to rest you will need to return to the sewers. Kill the lone guard near 21 (he will be approaching you anyway), the Mountain Stalker south of 23 (assuming you didn’t kill it earlier—you’ll need to pick the lock on the door), then go for the mob at 19. Fortunately there are not as many guards bunched up here. You can loot all the dead bodies at leisure when there are no more flashing dots on the map. Remember to take a shovel and a stone pick if you find them and haven’t already got one of each. Also take a shell if you find one.

10.2. Loot

Now let’s systematically loot the pens. Since we are already in the northeast, take the chest and bag from 27. Another chest and bag sit at 28. The bag has a scroll of Wall of Fog, a level 1 spell. There is a barely-visible bag at 29. It has some coins and a sling. As before, I am mostly interested in acquiring as many containers as I can. There is another bag at 30 and a chest at 31. The weapon rack at 32 has a mundane Axe (heavy, but better than a mundane sword) among other two-handed weapons. One more bag is waiting to be picked up at 33.

You can search through the piles of junk at 34, but chances are you won’t find anything useful or valuable. Now that you have a few containers, you may want to pick up some of the more expensive gear from all the dead bodies to sell later. When you are done with all the looting, proceed to 35.

10.3. Freeing Trustee

Overhead map of the Sewers under the slave pens

Trustee has been tied to a torture rack at 35. You can speak to him and free him. Unfortunately there is no XP gain for doing this, only the warm fuzzy feeling you get for doing a good deed. There is nothing else to do in the slave pens, so return to the sewers via the grate at 26 and rest up at 5 there for your next adventure.
